And, Kenny, we're here and we're talking about the Tigers again because this morning there was a press conference with Benji and Dooley. And what did you think about that? 00:12 I think we'll try and get through this as quick as we can. Because obviously, I'm a bit like everyone else. I'm sort of Tiger fatigued at the moment. But it is certainly the most newsworthy thing that's happening in rugby league at the moment. I think both Benji and Dooley handled it well. 00:29 Look, a couple of little grey areas here and there, a little bit fuzzy around the edges on a couple of things. 00:35 In what ways? Take me through those. Oh, I just – look, okay. 00:37 So, look, I think Dewey was – very upfront and admitted he made some blues. 00:46 I liked the way he handled that. 00:49 He, when he was pressed on specifics as far as what was wrong or what his gripe was, he said, look, I'll just keep that within the club. And I admire the fact he did that. Benji, Benji was pretty good as well. But Benji, and even acknowledged that he probably, he's still got work to do. But yeah, one thing I suppose, not to, I'm sitting here defending, you know, trying to over defend what we said, but we did talk about players vaping at, at the weight sessions. 01:22 Well, coaches don't attend weight sessions. And if kids can vape at school, they can certainly sneak a vape in a gym, you know what I mean? 01:29 They vape on the airplanes these days. 01:30 Well, that's exactly it. Look, yeah, the fact is, look, it's not a big thing, but it talks to culture within the club. Yeah. There was also things like – I found a little bit, he was asked about not contacting Dewey after the judiciary hearing. And he said, well, look, what you don't know is I had two sick kids who were on the verge of being hospitalised. 01:56 which I thought, look, he didn't need to say that. But when he said that, I thought, oh, okay, there's some honesty from him. 02:03 But then he immediately followed that up with, but I did try and contact him anyway. Well, if you didn't try to contact him anyway, say that and don't give us the kids bit. You don't need to, you know what I mean? You don't need to reinforce it. So to me, it just rang a little bit of damage control. But I get that. 02:22 And look, these sorts of things, blobs like this, are not uncommon in rugby league. They're not uncommon at clubs. 02:31 The bit that made this such a, I suppose, a touch point for everyone was... 02:37 that Dewey didn't play and he refused to play, which basically, okay. Now, in the past, they could fake an injury. Look, he's had a hamstring twinge. Something's happened in the training or his shoulder's not quite right or something like that. But it just became very public very quickly. And on the back of that, they found themselves in an awful mess and had to try and get their way out of it. Now, whether they can recover from this and move forward, I actually believe they can. 03:03 I don't think it's going to be an ongoing issue between Dewey and Benji. I certainly don't think the way the players have responded to it, that they're going to walk around carrying a grudge. I know a lot of ex-players have spoken about that, but I think sometimes they talk through a little bit sort of rose-tinted glasses about the way it used to be. 03:23 And the modern player, they've got the... 03:26 Yeah, in many ways they've got the memory of the goldfish. They play footy that way, they make a mistake, they don't carry their divots, they just move on and off they go. And these sorts of things, same thing. I think the players, certainly the way they appear to train with each other, You can't really fake that. 03:46 And I just think that they'll move on. And I think some of the things that Dewey did address to Benji, Benji, to his credit, acknowledged that there were some issues. 03:54 Before we get to Dewey, I just want to ask you about Benji. He said he conceded that he's still learning. 03:59 And I want to ask you the difference between this time with Dewey, who came straight back into the team, and last year with Galvin, when there was a situation. I know it's different. 04:10 Yeah, it's different. 04:10 But last year, Galvin, there was the furor over Galvin, and he had to come back through New South Wales Cup to earn the respect of his players, his teammates. So he came back through the Magpies and then eventually came back into first round. What's the difference? 04:23 Oh, look, yeah. I don't know the difference specifically. I think probably Galvin had a – I'll tell you something. This is what a lot of people overlook it from last year. 04:36 Galvin was contracted. West Tigers went to extend him. 04:40 And he basically said – and people forget this. He basically said, look, don't bother because I'm not going to stay here any longer. 04:45 Mm-hmm. 04:47 And that shocked the Tigers. They reeled back and they said, why, what's the problem? He said, look, I don't think I'm learning enough here. 04:56 And out of that, the Tigers were offended by it. And then they basically went to the mattresses over it, didn't they? Now, Galvin had to protect himself. He had to give reasons. Then it came out that there was a list of things he didn't think he was... were being done right. The dossier. The dossier of what was going wrong at the club. And everybody turned on Galvat. 05:22 And when you marry that into Jerome Luai, who basically said, look, I'm going for more money, who came to the club on a promise of getting the club to the semis and making them better, and first chance he got just took bigger money to go elsewhere. Yet universally everyone has accepted that. 05:44 and forgiven him for it. It amazes me the difference in how Galvin was treated, who didn't ask for more money, who didn't actually even ask to be released from his contract. All he said was, I'm not extending my contract. 06:00 And Luai has broken a contract. He's two years into a five-year deal. Not broken it technically. He had a clause that allowed him out. But in two years in, he's decided he's going to go. And then... 06:11 Completely different response from fans. It's all about how the club reacted, the club managed it. And this is a similar situation. The club has reeled back a little bit at first. 06:23 And Benji has acknowledged that there are certain standards that Dewey raised that they have walked past in recent times. 06:35 And I think that's the crucial bit as far as Dewey's acceptance within the group because whatever he's raised, now whether that's vaping in the gym or that's other things, we don't know because they haven't specified what it is. But certainly Benji acknowledged today, his quote was along the lines of there are standards that we have walked past in recent times and we need to have a look at that. They are the things that Dewey raised to him. 07:01 I think the other part that also complicates it too and it sort of blurs that demarcation between coach and player is is that they used to be teammates. 07:12 So they had a different relationship then, they spoke differently to each other then as teammates, whereas now there's got to be, there's now a clear, like a power... Delineation. Yeah, delineation is a good word. Yeah. And out of that, it probably just gets a little bit muddled at times, a little bit blurred over. And I think that's why Dewey probably felt safe to say what he said to Benji. And Benji fired back, called him a selfish player. 07:42 So they had a conversation which... 07:45 probably wasn't your normal coach-player conversation and that goes back to the fact that they did play together as well. But out of all that, I really do think that they've got through today and believe it or not, I think the Tigers can come through this with a bit of strength out of it because sometimes you just need that clearing of the air, a bit of a reset and 08:08 I certainly had a few of those this year and last year. 08:10 Yeah, but Benji is a rookie coach. Benji is still learning on the job. And part of that is it's very difficult to have all your – Affairs in order in every, you know, whether it's your training behaviours, whether it's your travelling behaviour, all those sorts of things, whether when you're on the road, all those things. And coaches who have been around for 15, 20 years, like the Bellamys and the Bennetts and all that, they just know what they like, what they don't like, what works, what doesn't work, what the players can do, what the players can't do. 08:45 And there's very little wiggle room. 08:47 Now, it might not be the set of rules that we think they've got, But they would certainly have their cans and can'ts about what they can actually do in certain situations. And Benji's probably still learning what's okay and what's not okay. He has memory of when he was a player. 09:06 But obviously the instinct of a player is trying to get away with it as much as you can sometimes. He's learning it as a coach. He's putting things in place. And there's probably every now and then where he hasn't realised something's happening or he doesn't realise the impact of something that's happening. And it probably is having a significant effect on the team. 09:25 So I think he's learning all that himself. I think Dewey, by the sounds of it, certainly Benji's acknowledgement today was that Benji, Dewey did enlighten him to a few things that are going on at the club that need to be addressed. And Benji said he'll go and work on fixing that. 09:41 Dewey... Well, Dewey said he put his hand up. He said he lost his head, could have handled it better, said he let the fans down, cares about the club, loves the club. And that's everything you want to hear about. 09:52 And no intention of going anywhere, which is great to hear. 09:55 Can Tigers fans forgive him, do you think? 09:57 Oh, I think they should. I think they should. I don't think Dewey... 10:01 He's been accused of being selfish. Yes, that's true. 10:05 But, again, it's not an absolute like we were speaking about yesterday. A lot of his protest was about standards that he didn't believe the club was reaching, that they should be reaching, to, in fact, be better. 10:19 Do you think he underestimated the backlash that he copped by standing down? Because it seems to be an about-turn, doesn't it? 10:26 Yeah, he did. And, look, he did underestimate that, and he probably... 10:31 A lot of people have already pointed out, who can remember the last time a player just refused to play? 10:37 Just because he didn't want to play in the position he was in. Gordon Tallis? Well, you can go back to Bronson Sherry. Yep. You know what I mean? Like earlier this year, no one's brought that up, but he got the shits when he got shifted from left centre to right centre. And essentially, Cameron Serraldo was, well, if you want to play left centre, go and play it in… Left right out. Well, he put it, go and play left centre in the State Cup. Yeah. And that's what he did. Now, that's ended with Sherry leaving the club. Right. He's gone at the end of this season. So, look, it has happened here and there. It's generally much quieter than what it is or what we've just witnessed at the Tigers. 11:12 So it does happen. And even Gordon. Gordon, his was all involved with the Super League and the rest of it. 11:18 Fill us in for that just quickly for people who don't know. 11:20 Well, what happened was he was at St George Dragons at the time. There was no Illawarra involved. 11:26 And they signed with the ARL. Gordon had signed a contract to go to Super League. And when the Dragons didn't go to Super League, other clubs were basically letting players out of their contracts to fulfil whichever side of the Super League war they signed with. 11:42 Now, for example, the Canary, who signed with Super League, let the big four go to Parramatta with the ARL. Because they'd signed with the ARL. They needed a club. Parramatta said they'd take them and they took them on. Gordon signed with Super League. They wouldn't let him. 11:56 He wanted to go to Brisbane. 11:57 He wanted to go to Brisbane. And the Dragons just refused to let him. They said, you've got a year to run on your contract. We're going to hold you to it. Gordon said, well, I'm not playing there. So he sat out the season and didn't play for anyone. So, yeah, that was his stance that he took. Yeah. But it's kind of same, kind of different though. Like different reasons, but it's still like, what I found is everyone admires Gordon for taking that stand. 12:23 But if you ask your St. George teammates at the time, they would have been pretty pissed off that he didn't play with them. 12:30 Well, they made the grand final that year. 12:31 And where he's contracted to play with Gordon in the grand final team, maybe they win that grand final. So they got beat by Manly that year. Matthew Rich. Yeah, so that was the... Look, you can always create an argument around this to suit your purposes. But I just thought that the Tigers this morning... 12:53 It's one of the few times in a long time they've actually got it right. 12:56 I tell you what, the Tigers need to be applauded for the way that they've handled the press conferences. I know it's been a shitstorm there, but the way they've actually brought Luay out a couple of weeks ago, they've brought these guys out today. You've got to be applauded for what they've done there. 13:11 Well, you've got to do it once. Because if you don't do it, things fester. And you could argue that if they've done it on Sunday, Well, we wouldn't have had another three days of it because I think today puts it to bed in many ways. 13:23 Yeah, I agree. 13:24 And the other thing I think, again, everyone overlooks. I have a look about the performance last week. 13:31 Benji's decision to play Javen Andrews, the halfback, didn't work. 13:38 Hmm. 13:40 Dewey was named to come off the bench. I don't think him coming off the bench is going to have a 46-point difference in that performance. 13:49 So I think part of Benji's... 13:55 acceptance of where they're at is the fact that he did try. Most have overlooked it, but it didn't work, that little positional change. 14:03 Last thing on Dewey, will he be there next year, do you think? Yeah, I think he will be. Okay. 14:06 Yeah. 14:07 What about at the end of last week? Did you still think he was going to be there? 14:11 I thought there was a big chance he was gone, yeah. 14:13 But I think he'll stay now. Yep. 14:15 All right, let's talk about Laurie Daly because there's reports in the newspapers today that Laurie will retire as New South Wales coach and go on to... Bigger and better things for him, I guess. 14:27 Well, look, just go and put his feet up and enjoy living in Queensland's heads for 12 months, I suppose. 14:33 Look. 14:35 It's interesting because Fatty Voughton was on our other show, Rugby League Insider, a couple of days ago on Monday, and he actually said just in passing that Laurie had said to him that he wasn't going around, and then that got picked up by the news. 14:48 Well, that's where it all came from was. See, look, I was told – there's a couple of elements to this, right? 14:56 One is Laurie walking away from the job and the coverage of it so far is because he's got a health concern that's stopping him from going on. 15:06 The health concern has been around for some time now, four or five months. 15:12 roughly, okay, it hasn't really impacted on his ability to do the coaching or his willingness to do the coaching. It's a separate issue. It's got nothing. If he wanted to coach again next year, the health problem would make no difference. So I've known about his health problem. It's not a problem that's life-threatening or anything like that. It's just – 15:37 Get a bit fitter. That's how it is when you get a bit older. 15:39 Well, essentially, it's a talk with the doctors. Mate, you've got to start looking after yourself a little bit better. 15:43 Get off the pier, stop eating cheeseburgers and do a few runs. 15:46 Things like that. And if you look at Laurie, you can see he's lost a lot of weight. He looks good. I spoke to him the other day. 15:52 I think he was 18 kilos he told me he'd lost. 15:54 Yeah, he looks good. Yeah, he does, which is significant. 15:57 Now... 15:59 Being on radio, you don't see him getting heavier, so you don't really notice. But he's lost 18 kilos. 16:05 But whatever the doctor said to him is unrelated to his coaching. And... 16:11 But it has been linked to it. Now, when I spoke to Laurie a while back, I've been told that Laurie was not going on anyway either. 16:21 And everybody, I think, was just... To me, it's Laurie's business. Laurie wants to make his decision when he makes his decision. I'm not going to try and rush to get out and get it out before anyone else. And his health, again, that's his business. 16:35 Having been through my own health problems in the past six months, 12 months, whatever it was... 16:42 It's a personal thing, mate. So I was just happy to let Laurie just cruise along. I knew he wasn't gonna coach next year. 16:50 I spoke to the people around him, several people around him who have all said, mate, he won't be doing it, but he won't just make his decision now. 16:58 Then I did get a little bit of a toll, well, mate, he's just starting to reconsider. 17:03 And I thought, that's a dangerous thing to do because you can bask in the euphoria of winning. 17:09 And forget everything else that went with it. Yeah, it's like looking back on a – 17:15 Girlfriend. I know you were going to say girlfriend. I was trying to think of something else. 17:19 I just threw that. All your girlfriends in the past look back fondly at me. 17:24 I don't know many, but yeah. 17:26 Maybe a few, maybe a couple. That's just human nature. The more distance we put between ourselves with things, the more fond we tend to look at it. I was wondering whether he was actually reconsidering taking the job, but it looks like I think there'll be now an official announcement later this week. 17:44 And he's on the radio each morning. And then Friday night, let's get it all done before the weekend really begins. Dolphins minus 12 and a half against the Dragons. They've just got so many points in them and the Dolphins. I think that as well as the Dragons have played lately, The Dolphins can get three tries clear and then put that into a Bulldogs win, which won't surprise many people. 18:26 But I also like Jacob Karaz as an anytime try scorer. The Dragons have signed Cody Nicarima to a two-year deal. He leaves the Dolphins. A bit of a strange move for the Dolphins, but a great move for the Dragons. 18:59 Well, the Dolphins, they've got George Williams coming, haven't they? I don't think they can get out of that deal. I think salary cap-wise, they can't move. 19:07 I think they might try it. 19:08 Well, look, I wouldn't blame them for trying because I think Cody Nicarima is in... Close to career, best form. And it's a real positive for the Dragons. 19:16 God, he's got great strike. Great strike player. What does it say for the current halves? Because they've got Metcalf coming there next year. So now Metcalf, Nick Arima will be competing with Flanagan and Daniel Atkinson. 19:27 Oh, well, look, Nick Arima and Metcalf will be their halves next year. There's no doubt about that. Metcalf's shown a real good ability. 19:34 in his time with the Warriors to just steer a team around the park. Cody Nicaroom has just got great vision on the field. He's a creative player. He's got a lot of points in him that he can set up for his outside backs. 19:49 And I dare say that I think it's probably Cole looking at heading to Super League in England now. Okay. I think that's probably all that's left for him. And to be fair, I think he'll go okay over there because the way they play, they're not as closely marked defensively. 20:07 He might still see a chance in the NRL, maybe at the Dragons. I think he's got one more year at the Dragons. I think he's adamant. 20:13 I think he's adamant. to try and see it out. The one thing about him is he's a fighter. And I'll tell you what, he's persistent and he's tough in that way. 20:21 And with one more year to play, he might try and see through and see what he can do next year. But there's no doubt Dean Young will be looking, I think, at Nick Arima and Metcalf as his starting halves. Atkinson, Atkinson's a funny one. 20:34 From the point of view, he played a lot of fullback when they signed him, but they were adamant they could turn him into a half, a five-eighth. And he just hasn't found his groove there. He's had his moments where he's been okay, but he just doesn't seem to be a half in that classic mold. 20:54 And the Dragons... 20:56 because of that, have just been so slow in attack, so stilted in attack, and so easy to read for defences. And it's been a real problem for them. That's why Nick Arema particularly will be a really good signing for them. 21:07 The team will look completely different next year. You'd think, though... 21:11 Like Daniel Atkinson, maybe he goes into the centres, but then you've got Moses Soorley, you've got Gutho, who knows the position because Drinkwater's coming. Then you've got Val Holmes, who plays in the centres. Then you've got a couple of local juniors in Sagranus and also Ollie Burton, who's a fullback. 21:24 Yeah, and that's an option. Isn't it great to have that option there if you're Dean Young? The thing about that too, I don't know where Gutho goes next year. 21:33 Because you've got half and five-eighth filled now. You've got your fullback job filled with drink water. 21:38 And your 14 is Conor Watson. 21:40 14 is going to be Conor Watson next season. 21:42 It's going to be... An off-season in the centres, I think. 21:46 Well, yeah, that's probably what they'll do. 21:47 But there is a bit of competition there. 21:48 He doesn't have a lot of speed there for the centres anymore either. And the one thing the game has shown, Warren, is... 21:55 You've got to have speed these days. You've got to be able to score long-distance tries. If you can't score tries from your own side halfway these days, you're pretty much a shot duck in the NRL. It just has to be in your arsenal. And that's been one of the problems for the Dragons is their attack is so slow. 22:13 Other than Sloan, There's no one there that really frightens you speed-wise. There's a few, you know, Holmes is probably not quite what he was. 22:23 He's still got a bit of pace about him, but even their other wingers, like I said, too, and I... 22:29 He doesn't scare you with his speed. 22:30 They're not going to burst past somebody. I want to just ask you, Kenty, about the Dragons' off-season recruitment because they've got Keon Kalamutangi, they've got Drinkwater, Connor Watson, Metcalf, you know. 22:43 And Nickarima. 22:44 Plus, now Nickarima. Yeah. I mean, I think they're probably the most successful team in terms of recruitment. The position on the table this year indicates that they had to do better. Well, they had to do better. 22:53 And they had to do better. But the thing about them, how they've got through cap wise, how healthy their cap's going to look. Now, if they haven't paid overs, if they're paying still fair market value for these guys, they've done a tremendous job. It's just, yeah, and you're never quite sure. The last thing you want to do is this time next year, we're sitting there looking at the Dragons. We've identified a couple of other areas that they probably just need to pick up a little bit. 23:19 But they go, look, we've got no room in the camp now. We've got to move some players on to try and find that. So until you know that, you never get the full picture. But certainly what you would, on first look at what they've done, they've done a terrific job. 23:33 Yeah, very good. Obviously, the last thing for them now is to tie up a few of those juniors, obviously the Couchmans and also Lodko Pacifica Tonga. 23:42 Yeah, and they always help with your cap, don't they? Like, that's the great thing about, and one of the more underestimated things about getting your development right and your pathways right is you get those young kids coming through. Penrith did this and showed everyone how to do it, and not a lot listened, really. But you essentially sit there and you get, say, the Couchmans, Now, for this year and next year, they've probably got couchers at discount value because they're still in the back of whatever contract they're on. But they're providing good value with what they're doing on the field. 24:13 Their next contract is they'll get pay rises out of it and off they go. So... 24:18 It's all about getting your cap right, getting the spending right within that. 24:23 I don't know. I dare say they would have got Watson for a good price given he was just looking for a layover until he gets to Papua New Guinea. But even Drinkwater sounded like he was good value too. So they've done a good job. 24:39 All right. Let's talk about the Broncos, Kenty, because they are still mathematically – In the game. If we go through. 24:48 The Broncos faithful. The Broncos hardcore. Apparently, they've sat down and they've done the, what are they called? The Matrix? Whatever it is. Reminds me of that movie. 25:01 What's the movie where the guy's writing all the numbers on the board? Beautiful Mind. Beautiful Mind. It's a bit like that. 25:08 But essentially, they've done all the number crunching and it's a million to one shot. 25:15 But for the Broncos to still make the finals, obviously they have to win every game. But we've gone through, and we'll do this until mathematically it's impossible. But we'll do this each week. For the Broncos to make the eight, what else has to happen? I've written it down for you. 25:31 So the Broncos must beat Newcastle. 25:35 The Cowboys have to lose to the Roosters. 25:36 Which costs Newcastle two points as well because they're in seventh position. 25:40 Yep. And the Cowboys have to lose to the Roosters. 25:42 Yeah, because the Cowboys are in eighth position. 25:45 The Bulldogs have to lose to Melbourne or a draw. That's difficult. So that's a difficult one because Melbourne and Canterbury are both in front of them, but they probably don't want They don't want either of them to win preferably. 26:00 Maybe a draw would be the best result for them there. 26:04 Mainly have the bye so they can't do anything there. Canberra lose to Penrith. 26:08 Yeah, which is, yeah. 26:10 Possible. Favoured. 26:11 That's the favoured result. 26:12 And then the Gold Coast to lose to the Warriors. 26:14 And the Gold Coast have to lose to the Warriors, which, again, that's the way that the betting would suggest. So at the moment, yeah, they need a bit of luck. Where they're going to run into problems is games like the Bulldogs-Melbourne game where they need them both to lose. 26:29 But one of them will probably win if it's not a draw, certainly. So, so far, though, I love the optimism of the Broncos faithful who all think they're a chance, they still think they're a chance of getting there if things work out right for them. 26:44 Including Ryan, our operator, who keeps coming up with these concoctions of how they can get through. 26:49 So along with the Broncos missing the eight, Canberra, Canterbury and Melbourne, who were all top four last year, all look set to miss a two. 26:56 It's amazing, isn't it? Why is that, Kentie? 27:00 Rule changes? I think the sixth again had such a devastating – look, the sixth again, the NRL won't admit this, but they've peeled it back a lot, right, compared to the start of the year. Start of the year, we were getting a dozen in a game, and it's driving everybody nuts. Now you're getting three, four tops. 27:19 One of the things that the referees got really wrong at the beginning of the season was basically every time they saw something that was a little bit dodgy, they'd just go six again, whereas the original intent of the rule was if it's a penalty, worth a penalty, instead of giving a penalty and slowing the game down, let's just call six again. So they've got back to that a little bit. 27:40 But what it has shown is... 27:43 the reward for defence is not there, as it has been in previous seasons. 27:49 The rules are far more skewed to how you go in attack, or how you rate in attack as opposed to rate defensively. And I think particularly Canterbury, particularly Melbourne, They really went away and essentially they spent so much of their off-season trying to get the defense right. And then the NRL Commission in February just decided they were going to bring in this rule. And that's really unfair because part of what coaching is about is you've got to teach habits. 28:23 That's what it's all about. Repetition. 28:26 It creates habits. 28:27 Habits are what you turn to under pressure in stressful times. You go to your habits. 28:34 The good teams are good teams because when those moments came, they go back to what they spent all summer working on. 28:41 And the top four teams, for the top four teams from last season to all missed the finals this season, when there has been rule changes introduced, it had such a significant effect. And it was more effective or more dramatic at the beginning of the season than what it is lately. But for the like, not so much Melbourne. Melbourne are busted with injuries and all the rest of it. 29:04 where Melbourne at. But you look at Canberra, you look at Canterbury, and certainly Brisbane, It's too little too late for them, this change. They fell so far behind. They couldn't get back. Now, there's other factors involved as well. Injuries have affected all four of those teams.
